Client Overview
Our client is a Fortune 500 healthcare company with over 2,000 access points across the US and UK and serves millions of patients each year.
The Challenge
The client needed help with automating and improving the nurse handoff process (i.e. the notes that are exchanged between 2 nurses at shift change about patients under their care). The paper-based process was prone to human error, inconsistency, and contributed to nurse turnover while compromising patient safety.
Our Solution
FortyAU built a AI-powered application that shows the electronic health record on one side and the AI-generated output on the other. Using a hospital-provided mobile device, nurses are able to easily review and add information throughout their shift. Using generative AI technology, the newly developed application can ingest, analyze and develop a cohesive and concise view of pertinent patient information for the oncoming nurse for handoff.
Key Features
- Dual-screen interface: displays the patient’s electronic health records alongside AI-generated summaries
- Real-time note collection: continuous notetaking throughout the nurse’s shift with mobile device integration
- Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG): organizes and cites content accurately
- Secure cloud environment: ensures patient information remains safe and confidential
- Customizable templates: organized according to nursing workflow preferences
Implementation
- Team: 1 Lead Developer, 1 Full-Stack Developers, 1 DevOps Engineer
- Schedule: 12 months from concept to pilot across 5 hospitals
Results & Impact
- 86% accuracy rating from nurses testing the handoff information generated by AI
- 90% helpfulness rating demonstrating strong user adoption and satisfaction
- Successful pilot expansion planned for rollout to 99,000 nurses across the healthcare system
